Solvendo is unique among these tunes in that it has a fraternal twin: Hand of God. Both were thought up in the basement study of our home on Twinshaven Road in Napanoch, New York, within hours of each other, and both are for the self-same text. It is rare that a decisive tone for a text does not come through strongly one way or another, but in this case it did not. These two settings reflect dual interpretations of James' stanzas "Love uncreated, ever creating". We entered the hymn with the twin tunes into a competition; it lost on both. At least we have rejection letters to show for our efforts! |
