Seminary Commons is a suite of three pieces, initially conceived as a set of two for my 1992 seminary class: the Kyrie and the Sanctus. I wrote them for a chapel service I was to lead, knowing that I would not have the luxury of an organist, but having on hand a fellow student generous enough to volunteer his recorder playing. In the first performance the cantor also played the guitar. Later, in my parish work, I was prompted to write the acclamation to mirror the sung Sanctus in the Communion Prayer. The melody of the acclamation is derivative of the Sanctus, which makes it comfortable for a congregation to sing antiphonally without the necessity of a rehearsal prior to the service. |
