The steeple of the Reformed Church of South River, New Jersey is topped by a weathervane in the form of a rooster, and not for nothing. Before alarm clocks, roosters would awaken people when dawn was approaching, or so I have been told. The rooster on the steeple of the church is meant to awaken believers to the fact that Christ promised to return: we do well to heed Jesus' admonition to "stay awake, for you know not the day nor the hour." |
