Marilyn Carlson brightened the choir loft of the First Reformed Church of South River, New Jersey with her enthusiasm and cheer, not to mention her music making. Upon her resignation from that position, James, as pastor of the church, and indeed, the whole congregation, was downcast that they would no more enjoy her playing. As a farewell gesture, James penned a text: "Our God gives us a song", and asked me if I would think up a tune to go with it. It was an offer I could not refuse. In recognition of her ministry of music and the gift of her presence with the folks of the congregation, I dubbed the melody Marilyn.
