Upon the resignation of the Reverend Doctor Robert White from the presidency of New Brunswick Theological Seminary, the Reverend Doctor Norman J. Kansfield was named to the post. We were not the first to want to honor him with a hymn; a tune was written by Erik Routley in 1982 for a text by George W. Bethune, himself a Reformed Church worthy, bearing Norman's surname. Outdone but undaunted, we proceeded to do our mite. The new president would occupy the John Henry Livingston Chair of Theology at the seminary, and Norman is an especially keen scholar of John Henry's life and contributions to the nascent Reformed Church in America. It only made sense then that a second tune in Norman's honor should be called Livingston. |
