The Reverend Nancy Clark Ryan was one of James' classmates at New Brunswick Theological Seminary, where we met. When I was in seminary I spent my senior year at her church in Keyport as her student minister and choir director. After she had accepted a call at the Reformed Church of Fort Plain, New York, the congregation there celebrated their two hundred and fiftieth anniversary for which they requested we create a hymn based on their theme scripture. As is our custom, James composed the text to which I fit a tune. The premiere of the tune was an anthem setting sung by the choir of the church, conducted by their organist/choir director Eunice Bollen with James and me in the ensemble. |
