Among the good souls with whom I became acquainted during the many Choristers' Guild seminars once held at Calvin College was a dear lady named Martha. Year by year we developed a friendship. This friendship spanned some heart-wrenching times in her life, while she struggled with a decision whether to marry her high school sweetheart. The decision made, she invited me to Downers' Grove, Illinois to perform the ceremony for Don and her. As a wedding present, I wrote a text based on one of the scriptures they chose, Colossians 3:12-14. As is my mind's habit, after the text was complete, it accrued a tune, a wedding waltz, if you will. Don and Marty possess the only handwritten manuscript copy of the piece Downers' Grove. |
