While I served as director of children's choirs at Christ Church in Summit, New Jersey, the congregation called an associate minister, Russell Eidemann-Hicks. For his installation, James and I wrote this hymn. The tune's moniker Appleton Place is taken from the street on which the parsonage for the associate minister was located in Summit.
